Another Me is a fine art photography exhibit showcasing unique and alternative colored gum Bichromate prints. Several layers of gum and pigment create each print that add texture and dimension to the photographs. Mahoney has utilized herself within all the images and seamlessly blended them together in one cohesive body of work. The photography represents Korean folktales that allow viewers to create a personal narrative as they walk through the series. Those unfamiliar with these tales are meant to “experience the artists’ work just like the artist first experienced her own heritage” –foreign, magical and unknown.
Erin Mahoney was born in 1987 in Suwan, South Korea. She graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Professional Photographic Illustration in 2009. In 2011, she pursued her Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography at the Academy of Art University after realizing her commitment to photographic education and the alternative photographic processes. Mahoney’s work comes from personal narratives that she explores through the use of self-portraiture. Her background in studio photography gives her the unique ability to combine commercial style photography with historical printing processes. The resulting images become an interesting hybrid of old and new. Mahoney’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and includes such places as the de Young Museum in San Francisco and Photo Soho in New York. She currently resides in the city of San Francisco where she teaches photography as an adjunct instructor at the Art Institute of California –Silicon Valley.
